A note with threatening language found under a seat at Upperman High School Thursday deemed a non-event after an internal investigation.
Putnam Schools Communication Supervisor Hannah Davis said once found, it was immediately brought to a teacher and reported to the administration and the school’s school resource officer.
“The student was identified and it was determined that there was no viable threat to students, faculty, or the staff at the school,” Davis said. “And the note had been in the desk for over a week. But we take any threat very seriously and so we did a full investigation of this particular situation.”
Davis said the SRO and the administration were able to identify the writer of the note through a specific investigation process utilizing key times and locations of students.
In an email sent to Upperman High parents Thursday evening, Principal Steve Robbins said as per school board policy, disciplinary action was given.
Davis said the district is very proud of the way the situation was handled and that the student did the right thing reporting what was found. Davis said the situation brings up a broader topic to continue encouraging students that if they see something, they should say something.
“Whether at school, outside of the school, we take that threat very seriously,” Davis said. “So if someone can hear something and they can report that then we can investigate it. It’s better to be safe than sorry. We’d rather know about it, even if it ends up being a not-viable threat.”
