Algood To Consider Water And Sewer Tap Rate Increases

Algood City Council set to consider major increases for its water and sewer tap rates on second and final reading.

This will change the rate for one-inch lines inside city limits from $1,400 to $2,475. City Administrator Keith Morrison said residential sewer taps are projected to double.

“Our costs are just going up, so we’re just trying to cover our costs,” Morrison said. “We’re not trying to make any money, we’re just trying to cover our expenses so that it’s not going back to the other ratepayers to have to pay for those fees.”

Morrison said he’s heard from concerned citizens about the factor that Brotherton rates are higher than those inside or outside the city limits. He said that is because it costs more money to pump water up the mountain and be able to maintain a backup source there.

Morrison said the new rates were created through the efforts of Public Works Director Victor Jones. Morrison said Jones had compiled a list of parts he uses and gathered prices for those to create a quote sheet with recommended increases.

“I just reordered some parts the other day with some parts that we used,” Jones said. “And on the two-inch tap within four months it had gone up 15 percent. Within four months.”

The changes will go into effect on January 1st, 2023.
