Sparta investing $1.8 million into its sewer system to address overflow issues.
City Administrator Brad Hennessee said a mixture of state COVID infrastructure money and local funds are being used. Hennessee said the project will be sent to the state for final approval.
“In the end, there will be a total amount of $720,000 that actually comes from the city of Sparta,” Hennessee said. “Our direct allotment ARPA money can be used for this. That’s something that we need to look at.”
Hennessee said the project will restore manholes to limit sewer overflow during rain events. Work will be focused at South Carter Street, Mayberry Street and Turntable Road as recommended by the state.
Hennessee said payment of the local match will be a decision that the Board of Aldermen has to make once the state approves the use of infrastructure funds.
