Cookeville Water Quality Control Department will begin the engineering design work for Mine Lick Creek Road water line improvements.

Director Barry Turner said the city acquired the asbestos cement water line from the Double Springs Utility District.

“A lot of their lines were identified as being insufficient to provide fire protection don’t his line is asbestos cement pipe as well,” Turner said. “And at that time we knew we were going to have to replace that line and we’re going to have to replace some other lines down there as well.”

Turner said while it is an asbestos cement water line, customers do not have to be concerned with its quality. He said replacing the line will also get rid of the brittle material, as asbestos cement is more prone to breaks.

Turner said they hope to complete the $40,000 engineering and design work to bid the project out next spring. The work will extend from Tennessee Avenue to Holladay Road, and is the first phase of water line replacement in that utility district.
