Upper Cumberland Aging Services is in need of more volunteer ombudsman to care for seniors.
Director Marie Ferran said ombudsmen are third-party individuals that are advocates for residents of long-term care facilities.
“They are literally our boots on the ground,” Ferran said. “They usually live in the community where the long-term care facility is. They agree to visit that facility several hours a week so the resident feels like there is someone there to turn to.”
Ferran said these volunteers investigate complaints, help with placements and are overall a voice for residents. Ferran said there is no limit on the need for volunteers. Ferran said there are 44 facilities in the Upper Cumberland, but the organization only has two paid ombudsman.
Ferran said a training will be held in November in order to become an ombudsmen. Ferran said you can contact the Upper Cumberland Aging Services at UCHRA for more information.
