Over 500 full-size American flags flying at Garrison Park in Crossville honoring veterans as a part of the inaugural Field of Honor event.
Event Coordinator Jean Smith said she got the idea when she saw a similar memorial in Nashville. Smith said she and her husband wanted to bring the event to the veterans of Cumberland County.
“When you look at that field with all those beautiful flags flying in the wind, each and every flag represents a specific veteran that somebody has dedicated to,” Smith said. “It is pretty awe-inspiring.”
Smith said each flag has a plaque with a veteran’s name. Smith said watching families explore the field and finding their loved one has been emotional.
“It is a sight to see to see them walk through the fields with their family,” Smith said. “We have several different kind of dedications. One says thank you for serving in World War II Grandpa. We love. You see families walking through the field and taking it in.”
Smith said the flags can be viewed from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily until the closing ceremony on Saturday. Along with the flags, Smith said a week of programs are schedule each afternoon from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Smith said a food truck will be present each night with performances from local school bands or other artists honoring veterans.
Smith said the event is made possible thanks to the county, the Lake Tansi Exchange club, the Colonial Flag Foundation and the families that purchased a flag.
