Town of Monterey working to address graffiti issues at Bee Rock.

Cultural Administrator Rafferty Cultural Administrator Rafferty Cleary said multiple recent incidents have caused damage at the park. Cleary said the town has had instances of graffiti before at Bee Rock, but that this is more widespread.

“We have thousands of visitors to Bee Rock each year, a majority of those are out-of-towners traveling down I-40,” Cleary said. “And so if you’re out of owner and you’re stopping at Bee Rock to check it out and you stumble across graffiti, you’re wondering, ‘What is this town trying to present.’”

Cleary said Bee Rock is not the only victim of graffiti. He said they’ve seen other instances around town in the past at places like Whitaker Park and the Meadow Creek Park concession stands.

Cleary said the city is looking into purchasing security cameras to put up at Bee Rock. He said the Board of Alderman has also discussed the potential of issuing a reward for the arrest of the culprits.

“I hope the Board of Alderman revisits that in January,” Cleary said. “I think a sizable reward will maybe get people talking and we can get some It’s just a total lack of respect for public property. It’s a lack of respect for our town. It’s a lack of respect for nature. It’s been an asset to Monterye for years and years and years.”

Cleary said they have purchased graffiti removal products to help clean it up.
