At least 10 people have applied to be the new director of Jackson County’s library as the application portal closed Monday.
Rebecca Howell left the position vacant after accepting a new opportunity. Board of Trustees Chair Brandon Korgan said the goal is to have the position filled by February.
“Among all the attributes, what we are really looking for is somebody who is absolutely committed to serving Jackson County and providing our community members with everything they hope for and deserve in a library,” Korgan said.
Korgan said the interviewing process set to begin this weekend. Korgan said a hiring committee of board members and other librarians make up the group.
“In a director, you need all the tangible attributes,” Korgan said. “You need to be very organized. You need to be versed in budgeting, policy development, computer efficiencies and program development. Collectively these skills mixed with an outgoing personality makes for a director who can hopefully meet the community needs.”
Korgan said the majority of candidates are local to the Upper Cumberland along with one California applicant. Korgan said a hiring recommendation will likely be made it the board’s January 19th meeting for the full county commission to consider.
Korgan said library directors today need to be multi-faceted. Korgan said libraries are more than just a place to rent a book. Korgan said they are cultural centers where many people participate in clubs, explore the internet or consume other forms of media.
