The Empower Upper Cumberland pilot program will host a clothing drive Saturday after receiving a large donation from the Salvation Army.

Director Megan Spurgeon said bring a bag to Washington Avenue Baptist Church, and you can fill it with as many items as possible.

“The goal is to really just get the word out about Empower Upper Cumberland as well as providing the clothes that have been donated to us,” Spurgeon said. “We know people have needs. The weather changing and kids growing and we just don’t want it to sit in a warehouse.”

Spurgeon said the event is open to the entire community. New clothing as well as shoes for newborns up to adults will be available. Spurgeon said no questions will be asked about financial situations.

“It’s just anybody that is in need of clothing or knows somebody in need of clothing,” Spurgeon said. “If we do run out of clothing, we will have to close the doors, but we are certain to do this again in the future.”

Doors open at 9:00 a.m. and close at 1:00 p.m. Spurgeon said the event is not directly connected to Empower Upper Cumberland but still serves as an opportunity to introduce the community to the initiative.
