White Co. Steering Committee B To Discuss Property Maintenance Rules

White County Steering Committee B will explore the county’s rules about property maintenance in the county.

That after a new County Building Codes Inspector position confused community members with what responsibilities fall under his jurisdiction. Brett Nash said he is solely responsible for building inspections and permitting.

“There’s no zoning in white County so there’s nothing saying that you can’t have a lot of junk cars on one spot, or this, that and the other, there’s no zoning for that,” Nash said. “I can’t jurisdiction if somebody can build as close as they want to on their property lines. That’s somebody else’s, and then it becomes a civil matter.”

Commission Chair Robert McCormick said the county had established rules about property maintenance years ago, but was never ratified by the state. He said that coupled with no position to enforce, the regulations had fallen by the wayside.

McCormick said that there are properties in the county that bring concern when it comes to property maintenance because they negatively impact the property values of surrounding homes. He said Steering Committee B will take up a discussion about the rules and decide how to best move forward.
