Monterey hoping to start construction on its Whitaker Park upgrades this summer.
Cultural Administrator Rafferty Cleary said the town is using some remaining ARP funds to hopefully get some new playground equipment. He said currently, the park has a lot of equipment that has been at the park since the 80s.
“They’re unsafe, some of them don’t even work anymore and can no longer be used,” Cleary said. “So we’re going to be using some of these ARPA dollars to build a brand new playground structure.”
Cleary said the wooden structures at the park are in relatively good shape. He said they recently worked to refinish them and spruce them up.
Cleary said the Board of Aldermen decided to remove some of the adult fitness equipment, which would put the project significantly over budget. He said it also wanted to have more inclusive pieces of playground equipment.
“Wanted to make sure we had more all-inclusive pieces of equipment,” Cleary said. “The original proposals called for maybe three all-inclusive pieces but we added another one to this. We’re excited to get to this point and really now it’s just whenever the equipment can get ordered and delivered and start construction.”
