Clay County High School’s Future Business Leaders of America heading to the national championship after taking home awards from the state competition.
Faculty Advisor Amy Dodson said the group works to instill leadership, public speaking, marketing, and other professional skills in students. She said Clay County’s FBLA team was one of two in the state to receive the Club 100 Award for having more than 100 members–that is about one-third of the high school’s student body.
“I’m just so proud of them,” Dodson said. “With Clay Count being so small entrepreneurship and understanding business is important to the future of Clay County. I think the students see that and understand that. They enjoy the trips to conventions. We’re heading to Atlanta and many of them have never been to Atlanta.”
Dodson said convention trips provide students the opportunity to see new things and have new experiences they might not otherwise get until they are out of high school.
Dodson said preparing for the state and the national competition in June requires a lot of work from the students’ side. She said Clay County High School only has one business teacher, so students take their own initiative to study.
“I have one student that did the business achievement award and that’s just a gradual level of things that they have to do in the community like build a resume and that type of thing and I was so proud of him to take the initiative, they do that on their own,” Dodson said. “Some of the competition was like word processing, business law, event planning (…) Everything in business is encompassed in the competition and they try to keep those current and things that are relevant to the business world.”
