Cumberland Schools Continually Working To Improve School Safety Protocol

Cumberland County High School went into a hard lockdown Thursday after it was discovered that a student brought an unloaded gun to school.

Director of Schools William Stepp said this serves as an example of why the district is continually looking for ways to improve school safety. Stepp said one school in particular he would like to explore improving safety protocols would be Homestead Elementary School.

“We have a few schools that aren’t high schools that have some of that,” Stepp said.”But Homestead has it set up that we still use the cottages. The teachers do a really good job monitoring the kids and getting them from building to building. But I would love at some point to see that be a single-entrance facility.”

Stepp said they plan on having conversations with their school safety partners to see if that is a possibility in the future. He said the district will continue to look at infrastructure and make sure students have a safe building to enter and the administration can monitor for safety.

Stepp said they also work consistently to make sure protocols and trainings are up to date. He said they students and faculty alike to be prepared for any situation that might occur.

“For example, the student with the gun at Cumberland County High School,” Stepp said. “That admin team and SRO did a great job. They followed procedure to a T. We worked with the Crossville Police Department and of course had our dual press release come out. We work a lot with our local law enforcement and emergency management to be ready when these situations come about.”
