Pickett Executive Pleased With Recent Audit Report

Pickett County Executive Stephen Bilbrey pleased with the county’s most recent audit from the state Comptroller’s Office.

Bilbrey said the only finding in the County Executive’s office was due to a deficit in the solid waste disposal fund. He said this has been a recurring finding for several years as the county works to close its landfill.

“The county had looked at starting to close the landfill out five or six years ago,” Bilbrey said. “And we have gone to a transfer station. FOlks still bring their trash up there and then it gets transferred out to another facility. So we have just been working towards putting back the money.”

Bilbrey said the county commission has approved five cents from the tax rate into a fund to close it out. He said as of right now, the county does not have the $1.3 million it would take to shut down the landfill entirely.

Bilbrey said the school system and he highway department both came back with clean audits.
