Upper Cumberland Regional Airport Board is working out a private-public lease agreement to construct new hangars.
Airport Manager Dean Selby said pilot Charles Huddleston will build a few mid-size hangars at the airport. He said the airport will be able to share in the profits made from the rentals.
“It creates kind of a win-win situation where the taxpayers or the airport are on the hook for construction dollars but we’re still able to participate in the growth of the airport using private dollars,” Selby said. “So this is a great thing.”
Selby said now that the initial lease has been drafted and looked over by the board, it needs approval from the legal team and from T-DOT Aeronautics. He said once the lease agreement gets approval Huddleston will be released to start construction and get the buildings ordered.
Selby said the additional hangars will help immensely with capacity at the airport. He said the location for the hangar already has ramp access.
“I would assume it’s going to take another month or so to get all the approvals back,” Selby said. “And then as soon as he gets everything rolling it should be about a year.”
Selby said projects of this nature typically move a little faster when private dollars are involved.
