Monterey Passes New Budget, Approves Water and Sewer Rate Increases

City of Monterey passed its new fiscal year budget on the third reading.

The final budget includes an assistant at the Monterey Depot Museum. Town officials will pursue grant money to help grow the fire department.

The new tax rate is set at $1.36.

The Water and Sewer Fund will receive $2,649,500 in appropriations.

Nathaniel Green, consulting engineer for water and sewer improvements, addressed the board regarding recommended rate increases. Green said the increases were quickly becoming more than a recommendation and with the new sewer treatment plant coming online, expenses would surpass income unless the increases were implemented.

Alderman Bill Wiggins asked for Green’s input on standard protocol for implementing the increases.

The board voted to accept the rate increases and begin the process for approval with rate increases expected to take effect in October.
