Pioneer Hall Museum Open Weekends Over The Summer

Pleasant Hill’s Pioneer Hall Museum is open for the summer.

Curator Deanna Smith said the building was one of many originally constructed in the 1880s. It served as the first boy’s dormitory of the Pleasant Hill Academy. She said the museum is an important tool for connecting people with the history of Cumberland County and its educational and medical pioneers.

“The more you spend in a museum such as this which is a history of the area, a history of the people, a history of the beginning of education, and the history here, particularly of all the medical facilities here in Cumberland County,” Smith said. “That means a lot to anyone connected to the building.”

Smith said the Pleasent Hill Academy was one of the first schools in the area to offer an education that local people could afford. She said everyone at the school also worked and lived together.

“The young men that came learned building trades, they did help build several buildings on the campus and learn a lot of building trades,” Smith said. “The girls and the families learned all of the good homemaking skills that they did not have access to before.”

Smith said the museum showcases preserved artifacts from the academy, including art, tools, medical supplies, kitchen equipment, and replicas of dorms and classrooms from the time. She said these items show how people lived and worked in everyday life at the time.

“It’s their life, the hard times they had makes us appreciate where we are today,” Smith said.

Smith said the museum is open Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday from 2 pm to 5 pm. She said people can also schedule tours during the week.
