McMinnville Public Works is placing landscape plants along West Colville Street as part of a beautification project.

Director of Public Works Frank Southard said older trees in that area were removed because they had grown into the power lines.

“So we’ve got smaller plants to hold the mulch back from washing,” Southard said.  “And the trees that we planted they won’t grow as tall up into the power lines.”

He said the city had more planting to do and would probably have the project done within two weeks.

Southard said the plants will beautify the street coming into town. He said they reached out to Hill and Hines Nursery and they offered to donate some of the plants.

“Since we’re the nursery capital they would like to see the scenery around here beautified,” Southard said. “I think it helps out.”

McMinnville’s Urban Forestry and Street Crews have assisted with planting. Plants placed so far include Okame 14 Cherry Trees, 43 Grey Owl Junipers, 80 Barberries, 175 Buttered Popcorn Day Lillies, 10 Firelight Hydrangeas, 10 Snow Queen Hydrangeas, and 35 Rose of Sharon Hibiscus.
