Byrdstown Votes To Move Forward With Replacing All Its Water Meters

The Byrdstown Board of Aldermen will move forward with replacing all 2,900 water meters across its system at a total price tag of some $1.3 million.

Though city officials had considered doing just half of the meters, Mayor Sam Gibson that does not make sense.

“I think we need to do it,” Gibson said. “We’ve got the money to do it, and we sure don’t want to do half of them and then drag around for years before we ever get the others done with us having the money to do it. I think right now, while we’re doing it, that everything will be even smoother. And if we just go ahead and do it all.”

Alderwoman Barbara Mitchell said the others might not ever get done if they are not done now.

The automatic Zenner water meters will be supplied by G&C Supply at a cost of roughly $125 per meter, including installation. Six different companies bid on the project. The price tag for doing fewer meters at this point would be higher per meter.

Byrdstown received a $630,000 grant earlier this year to install the automatic meter readers. By doing the entire project now, Byrdstown’s match would be roughly $635,000.

The town will open bids on the radio system and installation later this month. The agreement must be approved by state officials.

In other business, the board approved a road name change to Hillcrest Village at the Circle Ridge Apartments. The owners will go through the process of changing the name with 911 officials. The board also approved two vehicles surplus.
