White Co. Applying For Broadband Ready Community Program Funding

White County hoping to receive broadband grant funding to improve community connection.

County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said the Broadband Ready Community Program works to improve broadband connection in communities. He said it serves not to extend broadband itself, but to provide better access in large community areas.

“Maybe having a wifi system set up at our ballparks down on Highway 70,” Robinson said. “It’s kind of a dead zone in there and cell service is not great, kind of hit or miss, so I think having wifi down there would be a good use of that money.”

However, Robinson said it is up to the county commission to make the decision on how the funds are spent. He said the county commission approved applying for funds up to $100,000.

Robinson said a discussion will be had at the next steering committee meeting. He said other potential uses of the funds include public wifi on the downtown square or providing additional computers at the local library, for example.
