Crossville Fire Department could move forward to purchase property and relocate Fire Station 2.
Chief Chris South said the city attorney gave him the approval to take the next steps to purchase the property located off Interstate Drive. At a previous meeting, council noted concerns with a natural gas well on the site.
“Randy said that as long as we’ll be able to utilize the gas well, which we do have the intent to be able to do we think that would be a benefit to the city as a whole,” South said. “If we could even gas power the fire station and heat it with that, it’s a win-win for us.”
South said they will take all the necessary steps to make sure the gas is suitable for such use and would not harm any firefighter on location. He said they hope that would not be the case, but would be able to look at other options if so.
South said when the department first wanted to relocate several years ago, this area of land was one they wanted, but at that time was not yet up for sale.
The 4.6 acre tract is currently appraised at some $300,000. Mayor R.J. Crawford said the council will vote on the item for approval at its meeting next Tuesday.
“Our thing that was holding us up from last month was the green light from the city attorney,” Crawford said. “He has given us his blessing so let’s move it to the agenda.”
