Crossville City Council Continues Conversation About Indoor Rec Center

Crossville Mayor RJ Crawford says a referendum on the indoor recreation center will require a majority vote from city council.

Crawford added they are not to that point yet. He pointed to Tuesday’s work session as a way to narrow down and finalize more details of the project.

The meeting started with resident Roger Baker asking for a referendum on the project, something that has been asked for by citizens at almost every meeting when the topic has come up.

“The more I find out about this the more I smell a rat in a wood pile I sure do,” Baker said. “And I think if this goes through, the Comptroller’s Treasury needs to keep an eye on this situation and that’s a fact. Because you aren’t smarter than the voters that put you in.”

Baker also noted that it appeared the council continued to have work sessions at a time when working professionals would not be able to attend. Crawford said the timing of the meetings is purely logistical when trying to coordinate with so many parties across the country.

One such party was Upland Design Group. Council heard updates about the scope of the project from Kim Chamberlin about how to move forward with the work.

“If I call a referendum right now we don’t know what to put on that, we don’t know the price tag, we don’t know the size we don’t exactly what will be on that,” Crawford said. “What we’re trying to do with these meetings is get to a point where we can do that and then a decision can be made. It requires a majority vote, I can’t speak for any of these gentlemen here. So we may not even move forward with the rec center we’re still having a conversation that may take a couple more meetings.”

Crawford said he does not believe anyone is against a referendum, but they have to clarify what exactly would be on the ballot for a vote.
