Cumberland County putting funds towards the creation of its Building Codes Department.

County Mayor Allen Foster said there have been codes in the county for years just utilizing the city’s services. He said the county feels its grown large enough and enough people are building that they want to take it in-house.

“We just want to make sure we’re providing a good service to the builders and buyers of homes to make sure that they’ve got basic common sense codes, that’s what the county has always strived to do,” Foster said. “So that people know when they’re buying a home or even commercial as well that they’re getting a building with a certain level of quality.”

Foster said the department will go into the former Progressive Savings Bank building located on Highway 127 South. He said the county clerk is also going into the building. Foster the county will have to buy everything from office supplies to software to run the department to personnel to vehicles.

Foster said the next step will be to hire a Building Codes Director. He said they are seeking someone that has worked in the field of construction in some way and can read blueprints. Foster said he hopes to fill the role by October so they can be trained and ready to open on January 1st.

“Our number one goal is to provide good inspections, good customer service and we’re going to do it in a timely fashion,” Foster said. “So we’ll be ready to go.”
