Parts of Fall Creek Falls Closed Over Labor Day Weekend

Parts of Fall Creek Falls will remain closed for Labor Day Weekend, but the majority of the park will be open.

Fall Creek Falls Park Manager Sarah Leedy said that certain areas of the park will still remain closed following severe weather earlier this month. Areas that will remain closed include the Scenic Loop and the road to the Piney Falls Overlook, Leedy said.

“I would suggest that everyone keep an eye on the park’s Facebook page and Instagram as well as the Tennessee State Park website for Fall Creek Falls,” Leedy said. “As we will be doing updates as the weekend approaches on specifics of what’s open and what isn’t.” (

She said safety concerns include debris caught in branches hanging over roads traversed by guests that have yet to be cleared. Leedy said that the decision to close the park for cleaning was not primarily made out of concern for the physical safety of visitors. Leedy said that even after cleaning most of the roads of fallen debris, several pubic necessities were still offline for several days.

“We didn’t have any electricity and without electricity, our water and sanitation infrastructure doesn’t work,” Leedy said. “Without being able to offer the public the basic facilities for sanitation, it’s not good for us to be able to be open.”

Leedy said they got help immediately after the storm from emergency services, the Department of Transportation, and other state parks. She said that thanks to the help, the park could better assist the several visitors from earlier that day who got trapped on the grounds. Thankfully no visitors or staff at the park were harmed during the storm, Leddy said.

“We had over a thousand trees across the roadways throughout the park and very minor structural damage here and there,” Leedy said. “We did have a few camper’s recreational vehicles damaged in the campground and a couple of private automobiles damaged in the park.”
