The Cumberland County Highway Department putting together a list of roads to prioritize improvements with an additional $2 million in spending this year.
County Mayor Allen Foster said County Commissioners funded the one-time expenditure in this year’s budget discussions.
“The commissioners really felt that it would be necessary, that there was a plan for that money, but they didn’t want to dictate that plan, so they’ve just asked the road department superintendent to come up with a plan and present it,” Foster said. “And once he does that, then those funds will be released.”
The Cumberland County Commission also adjusted some of its expenditures in the new budget year to upgrade the department’s equipment. Foster said much of the county’s equipment needed to be replaced or upgraded.
Foster said Cumberland County Road Superintendent Stanley Hall can use the money however he sees fit.
“From patching to tar to paving, it’ll be completely to the discretion of the road superintendent,” Foster said. “He’s the one that would have the list of the roads and he would have the priorities and things like that, the public roads that need to be fixed. So it would be up to his discretion.”
Foster said the investment comes at a good time for Cumberland County, with additional money from T-DOT being funneled to help with state roads. Foster estimates another $3 million in investment coming from Nashville.
