Algood Beginning Search For Full-Time Chief, Preparing For Growth

Algood looking for a full-time Fire Chief in preparation for further city growth.

The city is looking for a certified firefighter to work 40 or more hours a week, contributing to both administrative and supervisory functions. Algood City Administrator Keith Morrison said that current Volunteer Chief Firefighter David Judd has done a great job in his position. Morrison said Algood now just needs a chief capable of performing Judd’s duties on a full-time basis.

“It’s just a gradual process as we continue to grow that we need to be able to offer more services,” Morrison said. “And the volunteers is how it’s been operated for so many years and we think it’s time to start moving toward adding some department staff and trying to do some things over there.”

Morrison said the Algood City Council decided that this year it was important to focus on improving the Fire Department as a whole. Morrison said that Judd’s name would be considered for the position provided he decides to put his name forward as an applicant.

“It’s just a gradual process to continue to build up the Fire Department and try to improve our ISO score and make us more reflective of where we feel we need to be,” Morrison said.

Morrison said that until a full-time Fire Chief is found the city will continue business as usual.

“I think it’s gonna help us work on the department, keep paperwork and training up to date,” Morrison said. “Allow us to do something things we haven’t been able to focus on as much.”

Morrison said in an effort to build up their Fire Department, the city has also worked on the Fire Hall building. Morrison said that the Fire Hall also includes a 24-hour ambulance service and a new fire engine. Morrison said that Algood is offering a salary between 40 and 60 thousand dollars for the position.
