The city of Monterey awarded a $100,000 tourism enhancement grant to continue the development at Meadow Creek Park.
The money from the State Department of Tourism will be used to purchase and install a new kayak docking and launching system. Monterey Cultural Administrator Rafferty Cleary said the city is focusing all of its tourism efforts on the outdoors, especially at the 90-acre lake.
“That in itself in an asset,” Cleary said. “And so we’re trying to capitalize on the assets that we have and make them a resource for our community in terms of revenue stream, but also just a place that folks can enjoy a good quality of life which we think we offer in Monterey.”
The city is in the early stages of a master plan for Meadow Creek Park, working with a firm from Los Angeles. The plan has been underway for almost two years, and so far the park has developed seven miles of new trails and a kayak and mountain bike rental shop.
“If we put everything that came out of that master plan into place, it’d take us 30 years or so,” Cleary said. “So we’ve got a roadmap for the next several decades at Meadow Creek Park.”
Cleary shared the news with the Monterey Board of Mayor and Aldermen Monday night.
