Sparta Aldermen Vote To Install An Emergency Generator In YMCA

Sparta Aldermen voted Thursday night to authorize bids for the installation of a backup generator at the YMCA building.

The full-building backup has been purchased. Mayor Jerry Lowery said the generator will allow the YMCA to maintain power and operate as a makeshift emergency shelter if needed.

“We hope we never have to use it,” Mayor Jerry Lowery said. “But it’ll be there available if needed and we got a really good deal on it and now we need to get that installed.”

The Sparta YMCA is a designated area for citizens to gather in the event of an emergency.

Sparta Alderman also approved a bid for repairs to the City Hall roof. The total cost, some $54,975.

“We came in one day, it was raining out and it was raining harder inside the building than it was outside the building,” Lowery said. “And we felt like that’s a really good bid to get this roof replaced up there.”

The board also approved a rezoning of two tracts along North Spring Street, one from manufacturing/industrial M-1 to commercial-D. The other will be rezoned from commercial-D to manufacturing-M1.
