Crossville’s Avalon Center Hosts Domestic Violence Event Tuesday

The Avalon Center wants to make sure the community understands the resources available to fight domestic violence, the purpose of a Candlelight Vigil and Resource Fair Tuesday.

The Vigil commemorates those who have faced domestic violence as well as those in the community currently dealing with the issue. Event Organizer Tessa Williams said the Resource Fair is a way to get the community more involved in the issue.

“We’ve had people in the community who have been in the community for a while and didn’t know about our services and then heard about it from a business or a friend who gave them that information,” Williams said. “And they were able to reach and receive services and get out of their situation.”

The event takes place at the Cumberland County Courthouse from 4pm-5:30pm Tuesday. Williams said many victims of domestic violence are often isolated by their abusers, another reason this fair is so important.

“You come across people who are in domestic situations for years and they have grown up as a child in domestic violence and then has consistently gotten in domestic violence situations throughout their life,” Williams said. “And they don’t know how to get out, or that there’s support, or resources available.”

Williams said the Resource Fair will consist of members of the community setting up a table to provide publicly available resources.

“The whole purpose is for us to be able to get our services out there,” Williams said. “So people who are going through domestic situations, or people who see domestic situations happen can reach out and be a support system to that person.”

Williams said about halfway through the event, organizers will be taking time to do an introduction and share domestic violence statistics. Williams said organizers will be commemorating names of those who have passed away, a poem reading, and a moment of silence.
