Jackson Greenwood Ridge Road Closed This Week For Safety Maintenance

Jackson County’s Greenwood Ridge Road will be closed this week to perform maintenance designed to clear up safety concerns.

The lower end of Greenwood Ridge will close from Beaver Lane to Roaring River Road. Jackson County Road Superintendent Daniel Garrison said the closure is to dig out a slip-off, which involves removing a guard rail. Garrison said renovations will also include the repaving the road.

“It’s just a bad slip-off that’s been settling down for two or three years now and they’ve been trying to add rock on top of it just to connect a good bond to where it quit slipping,” Garrison said. “So it’s not going to grab and the only way I can repair it is to dig the whole road up.”

Garrison said that the closure of the road during maintenance is necessary the safety of both workers and motorists. Garrison said the hillside-to-hillside road would make it impossible to work safely with motorists traveling.

“It’s bluff on one side and a steep drop off on the lower,” Garrison said. “The only way to perform the work safely is I’ve got to dig up both lanes. For one there would not be room to pass a car if I did try to keep one lane open with flaggers.”

Garrison said that he has the road scheduled to be shut down Monday through Friday, though he thinks he can be done sooner.

“I feel like three good days I should get it and then the road should be opened back up,” Garrison said. “It just depends on really what I find when I get down into the digging depth on the hard surface.”

Garrison said he has no way of knowing the extent of the maintenance needed until he can shut down the road and take a closer look. Garrison said motorists can take an alternate route through Gall Branch Lane and come back out on Roaring River Road.
