Celina Residents: Egg-Throwing Getting Out Of Hand Around Halloween

What some consider a Halloween tradition around Celina appears to be getting out of hand, with large groups of teenagers and young adults throwing eggs at people.

The egging reportedly takes place every year around Halloween, and tensions have continued to rise between the groups and citizens. One resident told the Celina Board of Aldermen Tuesday night that hundreds of people were standing in a parking lot this year, claiming to have permission and then throwing eggs. Vice Mayor Justin Rick said Celina is working to address the issue before it becomes a matter of physical safety for either party.

“There were guns pulled,” Rick said. “There was a gentleman and a lady that got out with a bat and a gun with about a $110,000 truck that got hit. There were several situations and there has been every year.”

Rick said that people from other counties often join, and that he has seen over 200 people himself. Rick said the problem used to happen across the Upper Cumberland, but now seems to be only in Celina.

“All the surrounding cities used to have some sort of it themselves,” Rick said. “But they’ve stepped up, they’ve got it cut out so far.”

Rick said that the city often has several people posted on particular roads to warn passersby of the egg-throwing.

“Some people who aren’t accustomed to it happening every year,” Rick said. “They go through and they have no clue, and then they get bombarded with eggs”

Rick said the city council will continue discussion regarding how to best handle the situation, though outside help may be required. Rick said that harsher legal consequences may also be explored to deter future egg-throwing.
