Brick Being Laid At Upperman High; Move-In Expected For Early January

Brick finally being laid on the Upperman High School expansion with a final completion date now in site.

Upland Design Group Consultant Kim Chamberlin said brick problems across the nation continue, but he is excited to finally have brick on site being laid. Chamberlin told the School Board Thursday that he expects the building to open after the holiday break.

“If all goes well, we’ll be able to give you that building at the start of January,” Chamberlin said. “Now, they will still be finishing brick outside, so safety things will be done to make sure there are no issues, no conflicts with the masons as they work. And then the exterior work, all of the final will probably wrap up sometime when the weather breaks in March.”

Chamberlin said there will have to be some conversation with the Fire Marshall to ensure that the building is deemed safe enough to inhabit when the interior is done. He said when the final touches are complete on the electrical work and safety concerns are cinched up, Upperman will have full use of the facility.

Chamberlin said the timeline for paving and landscaping on the building’s exterior will depend on the weather. He said he was relieved to have the project proceeding smoothly again because, frankly, he was growing tired of talking about brick.

Furniture is scheduled to be delivered on January 8. Director of Schools Corby King said he is excited to have a more comfortable space available for the crowded Upperman students and faculty.

“They’re kind of packed in down there, the students and teachers,” King said. “As we’ve continued to grow in that community and on the west end of the county, we’ve just not had room, classroom space for students. So being able to add that and occupy that in the second semester, we’re hoping the second week of January, that’s huge for them. That’s really exciting.”
