The project to turn Peachtree Avenue into a pedestrian walkway across Tennessee Tech’s campus is on schedule with major construction slated to finish in February.
Public Relations Director Jonathan Frank said grading and pavement work is going on right now. He said the stretch of road between Wings Up Way and University Drive will provide an entryway to the campus.
“The expectation is that by the summer of 2024, this will be a completely reimagined space that will further enhance the aesthetic beauty of our campus, and I think it’s going to give current and future Tech students a new space on campus to be really proud of,” Frank said.
Frank said following the completion of major construction, landscaping will span into the spring to give the space a park-like feel. Frank said projects like this one coming to fruition are further proof that Tech is a growing University.
“We’re investing in new spaces for our students and we’re finding new ways to make the campus even better,” Frank said. “Not just for current students, but for those who are not here yet, and I think that’s exciting.”
Frank said communication with students has been key as the project has progressed. School administration has been sending weekly campus-wide emails updating them on changes. Frank said these open lines of communication have smoothed over the process and kept students safe while traveling through areas on campus where major construction is taking place.
Frank said the drivability of campus is expected to remain relatively consistent with the way it has been, even with the loss of a major stretch of road for drivers. He said the loss of parking spaces that were located along Peachtree Avenue should not cause concern either, as the number of remaining spaces well exceeds the number of cars on campus on a given day.
“I think it’s about moving toward a more pedestrian-friendly campus,” Frank said. “It’s going to have a park-like feel to it, and it’s giving students a new space to gather and enjoy.”
