White County Commissioners Appoint Four To Senior Center Board

White County Commissioners began the reconstitution of the Senior Center Board Monday night with the appointment of four new board members.

Commissioners approved Karen LaFever, Robert McCormick, Shirley Scott, and Amy Bailey to serve on the 13-member board as the county representatives, joining County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson.

The former board voted to disband last month following recommendations from an investigator hired by the board. Board members said they had not exercised proper control over the jointly-managed center. Allegations of issues within the center including financial concerns involving the former director are being investigated.

LaFever will serve an 18-month term, ending in 2025. McCormick and Scott will serve through 2026, while Bailey’s term extends to 2027.

The City of Sparta will appoint five members to serve with the mayor. The Senior Center will also appoint two members.

In other business, a proposal for a new referendum on the county’s sales tax died during Monday’s meeting. Steering Committee A had proposed a new vote by county residents to equalize the county sales tax rate with that of Sparta. The proposal did not receive a motion.

Commissioners also approved the new agreement between the county and the three other partners of the Upper Cumberland Regional Airport. The agreement cleaned up language in the oversight of the airport.
