Thursday Night Corn Hole League Coming To Jamestown

A new cornhole league coming to Jamestown, beginning Thursday.

Sawbriar Brewery Owner Rhonda Moody said they were looking for something to entertain residents during the winter months. Moody said each Thursday night, people can sign up to compete in the competitive or casual league, depending on their level of experience.

“It’s a lot of fun to watch the grown-ups and the kids play together, and it’s a lot of fun to watch the guys who are a little more serious about it get more serious about it,” Moody said. “A lot of trash-talk goes on, but again, it’s family-friendly.”

Moody said many people commute from other counties to compete. She said this gives Fentress County a chance to build community, even outside county limits. Moody said seeing connections made between locals that likely otherwise would not have crossed paths is deeply rewarding as well.

“The Upper Cumberland has become a melting pot over the last few years and we’ve got folks coming in here from all over,” Moody said. “It seems like every time they come to our place, they find the common thread and build the community around it, and it really is neat to watch that grow.”

Moody said they will keep a tally of winners and losers throughout the winter and distribute prizes at the end of the season to the winningest pairs. The weekly competition lasts through April.

“You don’t have to be quiet, that’s another thing that people like about it,” Moody said. “Somebody made some comment one time that it was like golf for people that couldn’t golf, but we made the comment as well that we can sit around and laugh and hoot and holler and have a good time. It just adds to the atmosphere.”

Moody said she does not want to try to compete with the popularity of local high school sports, but rather to create a chance to spend time with the neighbors. Signups are on-site each week, and attendance is free for spectators.
