Gainesboro Searching For New Codes Enforcer; Updating Codes, Rules

Gainesboro is beginning the search for a new codes enforcement officer to aid the city as it begins to update its codes and zoning rules.

Alderwoman Nancy Pruett said the position will be more important because of recent growth in the town including the purchase of a hotel and an old funeral home in the area. Pruett said the city is beginning the process of updating its codes alongside the new search for a part-time enforcer.

“But at the meeting that I just had with the planning committee, we’re going to update the zoning and codes,” Pruett said. “And that’ll take about six months for us to update them ’cause they are way out of sync with reality, most of them.”

Pruett said she wants the city to hire the new codes enforcer while the codes are still being updated. Mayor Lloyd Williams said the city will look into finding candidates for the position.

“We’ve talked about this for, ever since I’ve been here, and it’s really hard to find somebody,” Williams said. “But I mean we’ve never, I don’t think we really put a lot of effort into it. But I feel like with all this stuff coming in, it’s time.”

Aldermen will move forward with the start to the process.

“What we’ll have to do whenever we interview this person is explain to them about our outdated codes and zoning and make them understand that you know, we’re rewriting those and to keep that in consideration,” Pruett said.
