Van Buren County Sheriff Michael Brock has confirmed the death of a man at Fall Creek Falls State Park earlier this week was directly related to the cold weather.

Brock confirmed the cause of death Thursday evening after receiving reports from the medical examiner.

Dozens of emergency workers spent almost 17 hours from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning searching for the man and they trying to rescue him. Temperatures got as low as -13 degrees throughout the night. The man was found in a 700-foot bluff line at Cane Creek Gorge.

Brock said the investigation continues. The man’s name has not been released. He is one of 17 people across the state to lose their lives during this week’s winter weather event.
