The Overton County School Board approved a contract with Kids Putnam Incorporated for a Preschool Development Plan at its Tuesday night meeting.

Director of Schools Donnie Holman said Overton County has run out of space for any more Pre-k students and has one more student in need of care. He said Kids Putnam will operate like a vendor, providing Overton County childcare service for the one remaining child.

“We would like to have another Pre-K class if we could find a teacher for it,” Holman said. “And we think we’ve got one lined up for next school year, but they’re not ready now, so, and we have this one student that we need to provide services for so we’re going through this contract with this company.”

Holman said the system is required to find services for the child and without a teacher available, this is the best option available. He said the program is through the Tennessee Early Intervention System. He said he believes the child will have to travel to Putnam County for the service.

Holman said there may be one or two spaces available at Wilson Elementary School, but from what he has heard from principals, preschool and pre-k classes are all nearly full.

“It helps us out since we can’t do any better at this particular time,” Holman said.

In other business, the board approved a bid of some $188,000 for the Allons Elementary School gym floor replacement. The project will also include volleyball sleeve installation for some $4,700. Both elements of the project will be completed by Covington Flooring.

The board also removed several board policies including Adult Education Programs, Gateway Testing, and Accelerated and Advanced Credit. They added Opioid Antagonists, Student Disciplinary earing Authority, and School Volunteer policies. All passed on first reading.
