City Council Recognizes Cookeville Hoops Teams

Cookeville City Council recognized the Cookeville Girls and Boys basketball teams Thursday night for outstanding seasons.

“My husband, who played basketball for Cookeville High School, he said that they used to tell him ‘you’re a 2A athlete in a 4A division, and that Cookeville High School is never going to make it to the state tournament,’” Mayor Laurin Wheaton said. “I don’t think anyone’s saying that anymore. You all have shown everybody where Cookeville is, in case they didn’t know, and we are so proud of you all.”

The Cookeville Girls team won the district title. The boys fell in the state championship game to Independence. The Cavaliers appeared in just the school’s second-ever state tournament. Wheaton said the community enjoyed the ride for both teams.

“It invigorates the community,” City Council Member Eric Walker said. “You guys put Cookeville on the map.”

Players from each team received a commemorate Cookeville coin while the head coaches received a key to the city.
