White County Senior Center Celebrates Grand Reopening

The Sparta White County Senior Citizens Center held its grand reopening Tuesday afternoon with “New Beginnings” as its new tagline.

The center shut down in November, 2023 after a state investigation into the center’s finances resulted in complete leadership turnover. New Director Jayne Guy said she is thrilled to have the center back with a clean slate. She said the center will provide a slew of new programs to get locals back involved.

“We’ve got a pickleball court,” Guy said. “We’ve got all kinds of new activities. Exercise programs, wellness programs, and a lot of support from the UT Extension Office as well as our county and city, and we’re excited to present some new programs and get creative.”

The center is the first in the Upper Cumberland to rebrand with help from the UCDD as a means of attracting interest from those who may not think of themselves as “seniors.” She said the center is incredibly valuable to the residents of White County, not just seniors.

“We’ll just grow into being active, to taking trips, to going places, to being our own community,” Guy said. “And then also being a philanthropy for others in our community and us supporting other people as well.”

She said the rebrand timed perfectly with the concept of starting anew and leaving the past behind. She said the big turnout at the ribbon-cutting ceremony only generated extra excitement for what is to come.

“It all just kind of flows together perfectly for a new start for everyone,” Guy said.
