Clay School Board Extends Monroe’s Contract 1 Year

The Clay County Board of Education voted Thursday night to extend Director Diana Monroe’s contract by one year.

Monroe’s new term continues through June 30, 2027. Chairman Benji Bailey said this was the maximum amount they could extend the agreement.

“Keep in mind that we could not extend anything over, beyond four years,” Bailey said. “The state Tennessee Code Annotated states that would go anywhere over four years.”

The extension came after Monroe’s annual evaluation from the board. Bailey said her overall rating was 4.37 out of 5. Bailey said the score was calculated by combining the evaluations from all of the board members across several categories.

“4.37, which would be slightly below exceeds expectations and above consistently meets expectations,” Bailey said. “There were a few who that maybe – who had chosen not to answer, and those don’t really calculate in,” Bailey said. “If you didn’t answer, I didn’t put anything there.”

Bailey said Monroe’s contract was extended through June 30, 2026 last spring to adjust the contract from its original expiration date in December.

In other business, Monroe said the kitchen renovation at Celina K-8 is set to begin on Monday, May 20.
