Cookeville City Council approved a change order of some $188,000 to the South Jefferson Avenue sewer rehab project.
Water and Sewer Quality Control Director Barry Turner said the change pushes the final cost of the project over $2 million. He said the project improved water and sewer lines from I-40 to the Putnam County Courthouse.
“This project ran into a few problems and conflicts with some storm sewers that we had to relay and some lines in worse shape than we thought, where we couldn’t rehab them with no digs,” Turner said. “We ended up having to dig them up, which cost more, plus added to the pavement.”
Turner said the department worked to offset the additional costs, but the additional pavement and concrete cost some $77,000. He said additional days of traffic control ran the department another $70,000.
He said this project finished up maintenance to lines and laterals that has been taking place for several years. The city has been rehabilitating sewer on that stretch of road in preparation for a project on TDOT’s 10-year plan to repave South Jefferson Avenue from I-40 to the courthouse.
