White County Library Heads To Drive-In For Reading

The White County Public Library kicks off its summer reading program with a trip to the drive-in movie theater Thursday.

Library Director Cathy Farley said the event helps them reach new audiences. Holding the event at the drive-in is designed to be more accessible for children and families that may find the library intimidating. Farley said the summer reading program is designed to combat “summer slide,” which is when children lose progress in their education over the summer.

“Our goal with summer reading is to stop that from happening,” Farley said. “Keep them reading and engaged. We don’t make them read any certain books. We don’t require that they do a report, anything like that. We just want them to have a positive experience with a book.”

Farley has been hosting the summer reading program for 27 summers. She said the library staff looks forward to the program each year and anticipate it to grow.

“The joy that I have in doing it now is even more than the joy that I had the first year,” Farley said, “I look forward to this event all year long,” Farley said.

The event will be held on Thursday at 7:30pm at the Sparta Drive-In. Farley said she could not give the title of the movie, but did offer a hint.

“I’m going to whisper and tell you that the title might have something to do with a lass with long hair that she keeps tripping over,” Farley said.
