Cookeville High School Auctioning off House Built by Students

Cookeville High School will auction off a house built by students in the Carpentry Program.

The class builds a house every year and the money they receive from the sale is invested back into the program. Cookeville Instructor Randy Mansell said students get valuable building experience from the project.

“I want them to be job-ready if this is what they want to do,” Mansell said. “I want them to be, have the confidence down the road if they go into other fields, one day they are going to have a home of their own and I want them to have the confidence with you know, I’ve done this in high school I can do this.”

Mansell has been the instructor at Cookeville High School for twenty-seven years. Mansell said he enjoys the program as he sees his students develop skills and mature.

“I’ve tried to stress to my students how important it is to have a good work ethic,” Mansell said. “To always be on time, to not miss work, and to make their employer money because if you make, your employer money that is job security.”

Mansell said the house is not a module home and is built on a stick frame. The house is on school property and needs to be professionally moved to the buyer’s property once the house is sold. Mansell said the house is ready to live in.

“It is inspected by the county building inspector and the electrical is all complete from the panel box out,” Mansell said.  “that is inspected by the state electrical inspector, The house is ready to live in, Kitchen cabinets, appliances, and floor coverings are down, it’s a finished home but it has to be moved and set on a foundation.”

The house is fifteen hundred square feet and contains three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The auction will be an on-site public auction. Mansell said they are offering private previews of the house for anyone interested ahead of the sale. The requirement for the sale is the buyer must have a 20% down payment on the day of the sale.

The auction will be at Cookeville High School on Saturday at 10am.
