Military Museum Raising Funds With Concert

The Military Memorial Museum in Crossville will host a “Raise the Roof” fundraising concert at the Palace Theatre Saturday.

President Mark Pfaffenroth said the band California Dreamin’ will provide a “flower power experience” inspired by rock and roll from the 1960s and 70s. Pfaffenroth said the fundraiser will help pay for nearly $200,000 the building needs in roof repairs.

“We were having an engineer come up there looking at how to re-shore up the second floor and we noticed that we actually had leaking up on the roof up there that was coming to the second floor in certain parts,” Pfaffenroth said. “So we felt like we needed to repair the roof before we actually start making repairs to the second floor.”

Pfaffenroth said any remaining tickets can be purchased the night of the event but the museum hopes to sell out as sales have been good so far. The event begins at 7:00pm and tickets cost $15.

“(California Dreamin’) had performed a summer concert out at Fairfield Glade last summer and some of our board members had heard them and said they were really good,” Pfaffenroth said. “And so we checked to see if they would be open and one of the dates available was Saturday, December 7, which is also the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. So we thought it was an appropriate date and we kind of put it all together that way.”

Pfaffenroth said the museum has remained a free attraction despite the need for funds because its members do not want a fee to stop anyone from visiting. Pfaffenroth said the museum is entirely volunteer-run with around twenty volunteer tour guides.

“The museum basically has three goals,” Pfaffenroth said. “We want to honor our veterans, we want to preserve military history artifacts, and we want to educate the public as to what part the Upper Cumberland played in our military conflicts throughout history.”

Pfaffenroth said the museum is currently closed but the first floor displays should reopen by next March.
