State Representative Kelly Keisling said he will vote against the school voucher system during this week’s special session.
Keisling said he received resolutions from all of the school districts in District 38 except Macon County expressing their stance against the voucher system. Keisling said those resolutions have had a lot of weight in his stance on the voucher system.
“The school board has a better touch, taste, and feel for their local communities,” Keisling said. “I trust they do and I always have. I will be in support of their decision.”
$450 million in disaster relief for East Tennessee is also on the table during this weeks special session. Keisling said he serves on the disaster relief committee and questions why Governor Bill Lee has waited till the special meeting about vouchers to discuss disaster relief.
“It makes us wonder why we had to wait this long to address this and I think that’s a fair question that many are asking myself included,” Keisling said. “I don’t understand why the governor had to wait this long to address the disaster that occurred over there and you know it’s funding to help our folks. Why do we have to wait and incorporate it into the special session for vouchers.”
Keisling said the voting could go either way but he does anticipate the special session to be wrapped up on Thursday at the latest.
“I could say that there’s whispers going on which of course there are but I would only be speculating,” Keisling said. “I have no idea how this thing is gonna go down. I know there is an extreme push by the administration to get this across the finish line.”
Keisling said his time in the session has been limited due to attending the funeral of Senator Frank Niceley’s daughter on Tuesday. Keisling said he will have to play catch-up on Wednesday to see where things stand on the topics being discussed.
