Sackett Selected For Student Engagement Council

White County School Board Student Representative Isabella Sackett has been selected to serve on the state’s Student Engagement Council.

Sackett said the council is comprised students from across Tennessee who speak with the state about testing, curriculum, postgraduate readiness, and any other topics they want to highlight. Sackett said she is excited to advocate for her community as she has many different friends in many different groups who share their opinions with her.

“That’s truly the only way that you can get them to hear your voice,” Sackett said. “We all have a voice as students, but to be able to just step out of your comfort zone and try new things you can really get your point across to people easier.”

Sackett said she will attend a hour-long meeting every month where the council will have a chance to discuss various subjects related to education. Sackett said she believes her work will benefit the region by providing firsthand insights to the state on what students need.

“I think that our school system is great,” Sackett said. “I love it. Everything about it is awesome, but there’s always room for improvement.”

Sackett said she was inspired to pursue the position after getting experience representing her fellow students on the local school board. Sackett said never saying no to new opportunities can open lots of doors.

“You could find something new that you really enjoy and that could even be something that you end up doing in the future,” Sackett said.

Sackett said the council’s first meeting takes place Thursday.
