Tech Softball Looking For First OVC Title

The Tennessee Tech Lady Golden Eagles look to continue their turnaround this season.

Last year saw the Golden Eagles finish 23-24 after recording six total wins in the 2023 season. Last year concluded with two one run losses in the OVC Championship against Tennessee State and Southern Indiana. Coach Danielle Penner said her main goal overall last season was accomplished in changing the locker room culture.

“We had a great team who bought into that.” Penner said. “That was our focus and it just seemed to translate on the field; we played just significantly better in a much, much better atmosphere.  Great team culture, much more of a family environment, super proud about that.”

The Lady Golden Eagles finished 3-2 to open the season last weekend in the Furman Paladin Invitational, winning their last three games. They will play five more games this coming weekend in the Army Tournament in Columbus, Georgia.

“I’d like to see pieces of the puzzle fitting correctly,” Penner said. “I don’t expect for us to be peak form [in the Furman Invitational,] I don’t, I mean we shouldn’t be, but what I’d like to see is some of our focus this year, more depth in pitching, the ability to disrupt batters’ timing and prevent really on-time swings by switching it up with our pitching staff.”

Penner said she expects to see change with her 12 new players on the team, including freshmen she expects to have a key role on Tennessee Tech.

“I really want to be a quick team that puts pressure on their defense and stealing bases; I want to be aggressive baserunners. I’m looking to see all these things we’ve been trying to instill these past few years really trying to materialize.”

Penner enters her third season at Tennessee Tech. She was hired after the 2022 season, becoming the sixth manager in the softball team’s 38 year history. Tennessee Tech aims for its first OVC championship victory and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015.
