The Cookeville Lady Cavaliers completed their season Friday night with a win over Stewart’s Creek.
The win avenged a loss in January against Stewart’s Creek for Cookeville. It also secured them a number two seed, a first round bye, and a guaranteed spot in the upcoming regional tournament. Cookeville Head Coach Jamie Gillies said she looks for her team to stay healthy down the stretch.
“We’ve got a couple that are out sick,” Gillies said. “We’re trying to get them better and get as much rest as they need to get back and then we’re gonna stick with our normal practice plan.”
Cookeville plans on holding a full scrimmage Tuesday and will continue to watch film and lift when they have a chance to do so. Their next game is the district semifinals at Lebanon High School Saturday afternoon.
“I’ll probably just watch film depending on the weather,” Gillies said. “I may try to get out there and watch them play but I’m not sure about this weather. I don’t know that anybody is.”
A decision is expected no later than tomorrow at noon regarding potential postponements of district games.
“I think we’re in the same boat as everybody in this area right now, just kind of playing it by ear and day by day, seeing what this weather’s going to do.” Gillies said. “That’s kind of the nice thing of having the bye is that we don’t play till Saturday so it’s not going to break us if we have to miss a day of practice in the middle of the week for snow but obliviously we want to be in there as much as we can.”
The Lady Cavaliers look to repeat as district champions this season in hopes of avenging their regional semifinal loss last season to Oakland. Cookeville will face either Smyrna or Stewart’s Creek Saturday, both of whom they defeated last week at home.
