Virtual Day New Snow Experience; Warren Goes Well

This snow event has produced a new aspect for Upper Cumberland parents, teachers and students: virtual learning days.

Warren County ventured their first last Friday because of weather and sickness. Director of Schools Grant Swallows said the school system had planned the virtual day ahead of time which could have led to an overall good experience.

“Most were online but some of our younger students did some take-home packets and so our teachers gave that out on Tuesday afternoon,” Swallows said. “And we felt like that for the most part I can speak for my own children who had virtual work to do. They got some good work in as opposed to being completely out.”

Swallows said he still believes students are better learners when in the classroom compared to being at home. Swallows said many schools in the Upper Cumberland do not have experience with virtual days and that the school system is reviewing how it can make virtual days more productive.

“At the school level, our principals and teachers are trying to make sure what they provided as far as work goes was the right amount and right information,” Swallows said. “And so they’ll continue to tweak that.”

Swallows said though it was a virtual day the school system still offered meals to students. Swallows said 150 students showed up to receive meals.

“We had the opportunity to feed some of our students that were able to come in and take advantage of that meal,” Swallows said. “So that’s always important to me especially when we are out. Sometimes I know families struggle to find meals and so I think it’s important that the school system can provide that and we did on Friday.”

Swallows said many school systems in the Upper Cumberland are running out of inclement weather days. Swallows said Warren County Schools may be pioneers as far as virtual days go but he anticipates more school systems across the Upper Cumberland to start using virtual days.  Swallows said the state allows public school systems to use two virtual days per semester.
